Colon Cancer: A Cruel Health Condition

Colon cancer Symptoms in Women - We all are aware of the dangerous disease called cancer. This deadly disease can occur to anybody at any time. It is actually a group of more than a hundred different diseases. By affecting the body's main unit cell, it can spread to any area of the body and thus can make people suffer a lot.

When it comes to colon cancer, like other body organs, the colon and rectum are also made up of various types of cells. According to the need of the body, the cells divide to produce more number of cells that helps to maintain a good health. However, when the cells keep dividing even when there is no bodily need, a mass of tissues grows. This group of added tissues is known as a growth or tumor and can be benign or malignant.

Benign tumors are not actually cancer and can be easily get rid of. Mostly, these types of tumors don't come back after treatment. In a way, they are little safe, as benign tumors do not spread to other body parts and can be treated easily.

Now, the question is that if benign tumors are not cancer then what kinds of tumors are called cancer. Malignant tumors are actually cancer. When this tumor occurs, it can invade and damage the tissues and organs around it. The most dangerous part of this tumor is that cancer cells can break away from the tumor and can enter into the blood steam or lymphatic system. Thus, it gets spread from the original tumor to form new tumors in the other body parts. In medical term, this process of spreading of cancer from part to another part of the body is known as metastasis. For instance: when colon cancer spreads to the liver, then the cancer cells in the liver are called as colon cancer cells and the disease is called metastatic colon cancer but not liver cancer.

Colon cancer is also known as colorectal cancer which is mostly arises from adenomatous polyps-clusters of abnormal cells in the glands covering the inner wall of the colon. With time, these abnormal growths expand and eventually degenerate to become adenocarcinomas.

People with adenomatous polyposis syndromes usually have a greater risk of suffering from this type of cancer. It is seemed that colon cancer usually occurs to people before the age 40. Apart from that, the factors that may increase the risk of developing colon cancer include: poor diet, obesity, smoking, drugs etc. Regarding diet, it is said that a diet with high-fiber and low-fat could help in preventing colon cancer. According to some research, exercise and a healthy diet including fresh fruits and vegetables is very beneficial in this regard.

Though the symptoms of this type of cancer can't be indicated properly, yet there are certain general symptoms that can be seen during colorectal cancer. Such as: fatigue, weakness, difficulty in breathing, changed bowel habits, narrow stools, diarrhea or constipation, blood stool, unusual loss of weight, pain in abdominal, cramps or bloating.

For the treatment of this cancer, surgery is the most effective way, where the tumor, a small margin of the surrounding healthy bowel, and adjacent lymph nodes are removed by the medical professionals.

Colon Hydrotherapy: Frequently Asked Questions

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Did you know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States? It may seem surprising and a bit devastating, but is very true. eMedTV, a medical informational resource, confirms this fact in one of its findings. Looking at the gravity of this disease, the American Cancer Society had predicted that approximately 148,610 people would be diagnosed with colon cancer and 55,170 of them would die of it in 2006. Whether this prediction proved true is a different issue, but what is more important here is to find a way to prevent this problem. Colon hydrotherapy is a clinical procedure that is recommended by most health experts to improve colon health. Patients who have undergone this therapy have reported a noticeable recovery from their colon related ailments.

Colon Hydrotherapy: Which Conditions Lead to Colon Cancer?
Conditions that may not look very grim initially may ultimately lead to a deadly disease called colon cancer. These conditions include:

Recurring constipationBlood in stoolDiverticulitisIrritable bowel syndromeDiarrhea

Colon hydrotherapy is an effective way to treat all these health problems. If due attention is paid at the earlier stage, colon cancer can be kept at bay.

How Does Colon Hydrotherapy Work?
Colon hydrotherapy is a medical procedure to irrigate and revitalize your colon. It is usually performed by a certified practitioner who has undergone special training for this procedure. He makes use of sterilized or disposable medical equipment to pass 5-10 gallons of purified warm water into the colon through the anus. All toxins, trapped gases and accumulated waste are removed from your colon through this process and thus you feel deeply relaxed and rejuvenated.

Is Colon Hydrotherapy Painful?
Many people feel worried before this therapy, since they believe it to be a painful process. However, there is nothing that causes pain. Plenty of water is passed into your colon through the anus and then passed out using massage and other stimulation techniques. So, there is no piercing or any kind of discomfort. In fact, at the end of the therapy, you feel more refreshed. In rare cases, people report of some pain, which is generally the result of hesitation and tension. A professional therapist will not only make the whole procedure a lot easier for you but can also make you comfortable with his pre-therapy counseling session.

Can Colon Hydrotherapy Result in Constipation or Diarrhea?
Sometimes people report of constipation or frequent bowel movements following colon hydrotherapy. These conditions are the result of poor colon health. A very weak colon is unable to make regular bowel movements even after a few sessions of this therapy. For this, the colon requires to be strengthened and healed properly. Very rarely, diarrhea is experienced after this therapy. This is because extra water is induced into the colon, which makes the stool softer than usual. However, this is not a serious situation and does not last more than 3-4 days following colonic treatment.

Colon health is a priority for detoxifying the body, encouraging weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

To know more about this therapy and to enlist the services of some of the most skilled practitioners in the tri-state area, click Colon Hydrotherapy. This clinic offers colon hydrotherapy using state of the art equipment under the supervision of certified and experienced professionals.

A 5-Minute Screening Test Could Stop Colon Cancer

Colon Cancer Symtoms in Women - Colon cancer, also commonly referred to as colorectal or bowel cancer occurs in the colon, an area starting from the large intestine to the rectum (end of the colon). There are virtually no obvious warning signs of bowel cancer in its early stages. Around nine in ten cases of colon cancer occur in people aged 55 and above.

According to a study that spanned eleven years and involved more than 170,000 participants, UK researchers found that men and women aged between fifty-five and sixty-four who had undergone a screening with a single flexible sigmoidscopy, had their risk of colon cancer reduced, compared to those who did not receive the same screening. To date, no other colon cancer screening has shown such results.

What is The Flex-Scope Test and How Does it Work?

The screening test is called the Flexi-Scope test, and it takes about five minutes to complete. Though short, taking this could essentially reduce the occurrence of this disease by a third and the number of people dying from colon cancer.

It is a painless procedure that uses a flexible plastic or metal tube (sigmoidoscopy) to insert into the rectum to examine the lower part of the colon, known as the sigmoid. The tube has a light source and a tiny optic camera at the end to detect any polyp (or fleshy growth) or inflamed tissue found along the bowel wall.

The main objective of this screening is to find polyps early so that they can be removed as soon as possible before they get the chance to become cancerous. Polyps can remain harmless but because colon cancer can begin from a polyp so speedy removal is deemed as a preventive measure.

At present, the standard method for screening colon cancer involves the faecal blood test which looks for traces of blood in stools that naked to the eye. This blood test is still very much essential to detect areas of the colon where the Flexi-Scope is unable to reach.

Difference Between Sigmoidoscopy and Colonscopy

The Flexi-Scope does sound very similar to a colonscopy since both involves inserting a tube to view the inner lining. However the main difference lies with the scope of the view. A colonoscopy lets the doctor see the entire colon while a sigmoidoscopy focuses the view specifically on the sigmoid colon or the lower third of the colon. A sigmoidoscopy takes less time to complete and requires less preparation as compared to a colonscopy.

Effective Colon Cancer Prevention Methods

Colon Cancer symptoms in Women - With the advent of many types of illnesses and diseases, the medical field is continuously on the search for new ways in treating them. Because of the advanced technology that the world offers, it is possible to come up with treatment options and procedures that are high tech and very effective.

Cancer is not a new subject. In fact, millions of people are diagnosed with cancer every year and the number is still increasing. This is a typical scenario that if you try to look at it more carefully, you will soon realize that what this world needs is preventive measures in order to stay away from the disease.

Many people are now familiar with colon cancer. In fact in the United States, this is third among the most common occurring cancer that is often the cause of death in the nation. But since the number of colon cancer patients is still increasing, it only means that many people are still unaware of the dreaded disease.

How do you get it? If you want to understand things a lot better, you need to know the importance of the colon. The colon is part of the intestines, particularly the large intestine. The function of the large intestine is to absorb the water found in the undigested foods. If it doesn't function properly, then it can cause certain abnormalities and eventually colon cancer.

It is often called colorectal cancer. This is the malignancy of your large intestine and can transpire in the different segments of your colon but it often occurs closest to your rectum and that is sigmoid colon.

According to the ACS (American Cancer Society), over 94,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer every year and around 48,000 of them die of the disease. In Canada, around 17,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer each year and about 6,400 of them die of the disease.

The numbers involved in colon cancer is really huge so there is a need to increase the awareness of the people about colon cancer.

So how can you prevent colon cancer?

Your lifestyle is greatly involved in preventing colon cancer. First, you should check your daily diet. What are the foods that you usually eat everyday? If your diet consists largely of red meat and is very low in fiber, then your colon will be bound to suffer. If you're not that sure about the right kinds of food to eat, you can consult your doctor or dietician. He or she can provide you with a list of foods that you can eat in order to have a healthy colon.

Most doctors will recommend a high fiber diet that consists largely of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and many more. Of course you can still eat red meat but the amount should be limited. You don't have to change immediately because changing old habits is really hard. But if you don't want to get colon cancer, this is the best time to make the change. You can do it gradually and the effects are really worth it over the long term.

Also try to get good exercise. You can walk and jog around your neighborhood several times a week. Or you can do simple exercises at home early in the morning or after work. By living a healthy lifestyle, you can prevent colon cancer.

Do You Need a Colonoscopy to Prevent Colon Cancer?

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Fewer and fewer people are dying from colon cancer, it used to be a big killer, but today thanks to early screening doctors are catching it in time and preventing polyps from becoming cancerous. It has been recommended that when you turn 45 to 50 years old you should go in for screening. If they don't find any polyps, you are probably good for another 10 years. There are some people who go in every five years, but now it appears that is too often, and perhaps not needed.

This should be a sign of relief because no one really wants to go in to get a colonoscopy. You can understand why without me explain it here in this article. So does that mean colon cancer is not as serious as it once was? Oh no, it's still very serious, it's just that if it's caught early it can be prevented or treated without it becoming to life-threatening. It used to be this type of cancer was almost a death sentence, it's not that way anymore.

There was an interesting article recently in the Wall Street Journal on May 10, 2011 titled "New Study Questions Colonoscopy Frequency" by Katherine Hobson and posted onto the "Best of Health Blog" section. The article stated that researchers discovered that the over use of these procedures, and that if no polyps are found there is really no need to do another colonoscopy for 10-years.

The research seems to coincide with Medicare cuts on reimbursements, and on their current policies. Likewise, colonoscopies are not exactly the most happiest of things you can do at a doctor's office or hospital if you smell what I mean. Okay so, apparently with these results you should be able to go in and get a colonoscopy and if nothing is found and everything looks good (correct), you won't need to go in again for about 10 years or more.

The American Cancer Society has confirmed these reports and research in its own data. There are some other things you should probably know that you can find out online quite easily. There are certain types of vegetables and foods with antioxidants that you can eat to help further reduce your risk of getting colon cancer.

Therefore you should, why take any risks? Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it. If you run across to anymore interesting research on this topic I would please ask that you shoot me an e-mail and point me to the study.

Colon Cancer: Saving Your Life Through Early Diagnosis

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Colon cancer is a kind of disease that is very hard to detect in its early stages. You have to consider the fact that colon cancer can be effectively treated if it is diagnosed early. When it reaches more advanced stages, the chances of getting treated for this kind of disease will decrease especially if the cancer has spread to different parts of your body and to other organs.

First of all, the symptoms of colon cancer do not appear in all patients when the cancer is in its early stages. This is what makes it difficult to detect. This is one of the main reasons why physicians and oncologists recommend that people should get a regular check up for colon cancer screenings.

The fact that it is a type of cancer that is number two in the list of killer diseases, you too should get a screening for colon cancer regardless of your family history. You have to remember that the number one thing that increases the chances of colon cancer to develop in your body is unhealthy eating habits.

With all the chemicals and growth enhancers that are sprayed and injected into the food we eat today, you can never really make sure whether or not you are eating right. Furthermore, eating fatty foods and foods that are low in fiber will also increase your risk of getting this deadly disease. Although colon cancer deaths are continuing to decline, the figures are still very high. In fact, research has found that every year, over one hundred thousand people are diagnosed with this

type of cancer. Half of those diagnosed with this killer disease will not survive or will die from the disease. As you can see, it is very important to get screened in a proper colon cancer clinic in order to detect cancer on its early stages. Even if you don't feel anything wrong with your body, you need to get screened as there may be cancerous cells lingering inside your colon waiting for the right conditions to become malignant.

Mainly, the symptoms that people with colon cancer feel is that they are constantly constipated or constantly having diarrhea problems for more than a week. The stool is a much thinner and often comes with blood. You may also feel abdominal pain, bloating and cramps and you will experience loss of weight in a short period of time.

What the clinic and the professionals will do is properly diagnose you through x-rays, CAT scans, and by taking blood and stool samples. Here, they will be able to determine if cancer cells are present. If it is, they will tell you about it and also determine if there are any tumors in your colon. If there is, they will also do some examinations to see if the tumors are benign or malignant. Usually, benign tumors are not removed as it doesn't pose any danger to the patient. However, some people get it removed for the fear that the benign tumor may transform into a malignant one.

These are the things you have to remember about colon cancer. By visiting a colon cancer clinic for regular screening, you will be able to see if you have this killer disease or not. And, if you have, it will be detected in its early stages and get treated by professionals right away.

Colon Cancer Survival Rate - Dare To Know Your Chances

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - A colon cancer survival rate refers to the percentage of people who were reported still living after being diagnosed with the cancer about 5 yrs ago.

There are already a lot of Americans that were diagnosed (and still being diagnosed) with cancer of the colon today. In 2005, more than 70,000 men and almost 70,000 women were diagnosed with colon cancer. In addition, more than 25,000 lives from each gender are being taken annually in the US but the fortunate news is, the colon cancer survival rate is also getting higher as the years progress.

The reason for this is the better health care facilities and services, faster treatment and modern advances. Many physicians believe in the fact that if only most cancer cases are detected early, the rate of survival would surge sky high. The same as cancer of the colon - it can be avoided altogether if there is early detection and more people undergoes colonoscopy as one of the procedures to be done to detect colon cancer.

More less intrusive techniques are also being discovered and introduced by doctors and hospitals. The good thing about them is that they are easier to use and takes less time, which makes it very convenient for both the medical practitioner and the patients.

The average over-all colon cancer survival rate for patients in some countries is reported as follows:

• 62% in Australia
• 68% in Korea
• 43% in Europe
• 62% in the United States of America

As mentioned before, the earlier the stage, the better your chances of survival. The colon cancer survival rate may only depend on what stage a patient is diagnosed. The good thing about early detection is that the cancer cells are still confined in a certain small area, making it easier to be removed from the body. In its earliest stage, the rate of survival is over 95%. To increase the rate of survival, regular screening is heavily advised to find and treat the disease in time.

It is said that if Americans were regularly examined for colon cancer, we can save about 25,000 lives each year. That is a lot of people who are given chances to live second lives. Sometimes, when the disease is already there, "prevention" is instantaneously rendered useless. So the best thing that you can do is detect the disease early. Make sure you got the best doctors for the job! You can also decrease the chances of getting the cancer by eating healthy foods and living a healthy life.

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Doctors have a proper way of discussing with the patients the prognosis or outlook of their diseases. Patients or anyone who is infected with a dreaded disease like cancer of the colon may want to know the statistics of people being able to make it past the deadly sickness, or as more properly known, colon cancer survival rate. Most of the time, statistics are based upon a percentage of patients and their 5 year struggle against cancer of the colon. This ratio is based upon people who lived beyond 5 years upon discovery of the malignant tumor.

There are also people who lived beyond 5 years and have been cured of the dreaded cancer disease.
For doctors to get the 5 year survival statistics, a list of people treated at least the past 5 years are compiled and given as a resource for doctors all around the whole world. There are a huge improvement in colon cancer survival rate in the past few years due to the improvement in treatments and ways of detecting this type of cancer.

Survival statistics do not generally mean the possible outcome of a patient's disease, for this was previously recorded outcomes of people who have had cancer of the colon. There are a lot of contributing factors that may affect ones colon cancer survival rate. There are times that the grade of cancer or the genetic changes in ones malignant cancer cell can be a major factor in one's survival chances. Another factor is how the malignant cells respond to the treatment being given. We should remember that survival statistics are just rough estimates on the stage of the cancer you are in. This does not generally mean that if you have a stage 4 colon cancer you will have a huge chance of not surviving for there are a lot of factors that may affect your survival statistics. A doctor would only use these rates to assess the type of treatment you may need in order to be healed.

Colon cancer survival rate differ from stage. As the damage of the malignant cancer cells start to expand to the rest of the body, the chances of one to survive drops down a whole lot of percentages. A stage one colon cancer survival rate at today's time goes up to as high as 90% and drops down to just 70% when it reaches the second stage. Stage 3 survival rate is just ranges from 40-58% and drops down to 10-20% at its final phase.

Reduce Colon Cancer Risk By Eating These Vegetables

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Australian researchers have come upon some interesting findings while assessing colon cancer risk. After examining the eating patterns of just under 1000 patients suffering with colorectal cancer, along with another 1,021 control subjects without the disease, they found that eating certain fruits and veggies was associated with a lower risk of cancer for both the upper and lower colon.

While fruits and veggies have been researched extensively in terms of colon cancer risk, no work has been done in terms of food intake and the site of the cancer within the colon. If these findings are repeated in larger studies, this might spur recommendations for a higher consumption of veggies as a way to reduce the cancer risk in the lower part of the colon.

Eating the brassica veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and turnips appears to bring down the risk for cancer forming in the upper area of the colon.

Both fruit and veggie intake (even total veggie intake on its own) cut the risk of cancers of the lower colon.

Eating more apples, as well as dark, yellow veggies was also associated with a significantly smaller chance of colon cancer developing in the lower regions.

Unexpectedly, higher consumption of fruit juice was tied to a higher risk of rectal cancer.

So where does this leave you if you're at risk, or know someone who is?

Work to avoid as many of the risk factors for this form (and all forms) of cancer as you can. Make the changes to your diet (low fat, high fiber) that bring your body more of the good, natural, healthy foods and limit (or eliminate) the calorie and saturated fat laden treats.

Get up and get active - 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise each day is a good goal to work for. And make other changes in your lifestyle - such as quitting smoking or limiting your alcohol Intake - those will also help cut your chances of getting colon cancer.

Experts know there is no one cause of colon cancer. Nearly all of these cancers start out as benign (non cancerous) polyps. From the time those first unusual cells grow into polyps, experts believe it takes an average of 10 - 15 years for cancer to form. Regular screening finds, and gets rid of, these polyps while they are non-cancerous.

This is why it is vital to get the screenings (usually starting at age 50) that are recommended for you. Colonoscopy is the standard test used to view the whole colon, and therefore the best screening process for cancer in this body system.

By being screened as your doctor recommends, before you have any symptoms, you'll have the best chance of any cancer being found while it is still small, and most treatable.

The American Cancer Society estimates that this type of cancer a leading cause of cancer related deaths in the U.S. In 2011, it will claim an estimated 49,380 lives. The good news is that the death rate has dropped in the last 15 years, surely the result of increased colon cancer risk awareness and more of us being screened for this disease.

Colon Cancer Symptoms From Eating Too Much Meat

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Important news for all of us, especially those who have a higher chance of suffering from colon cancer symptoms. A new report suggests that eating too much meat, including processed meats might just up your risk of getting colon cancer. Cancer of the colon is the 3rd most common cancer, after skin cancers, diagnosed in the United States.

Doctors tell us that most all cancers of this type get started in the glands that line the colon and rectum. This type of cancer often starts out as noncancerous polyps that over time develop into cancer. Experts are coming to believe that what we put into our bodies may play a part in the risk of colon cancer - a high fat, low fiber diet, loaded with red or processed meats is not what your body needs to stay cancer free.

The AICR recommends eating just 18 ounces of red meat (beef, lamb, pork) per week as this brings only a tiny increase in risk of colon cancer. This works out to roughly five or six small portions per week.

Processed meat is a no-no as the findings of the report showed that consuming processed meat increases your risk of colon cancer two times as much as eating red meats. The larger the quantities of processed meat you eat, the more risk you have for developing colon cancer.

Those who eat 24.5 ounces a week (about 3.5 ounces a day) of red meats face a 17% higher chance of colon cancer in comparison to those who eat no red/processed meats according to the AICR/WCRF report. Those who ate 7 ounces of red meat a day, a whopping 49 ounces a week, were found to have a 34% greater chance of developing colon cancer.

Why is red and processed meat so bad for you?

No one knows exactly, some suggest chemicals known as heterocyclicamines, a by product when cooking meat at a very high temperature, might play a part. Processed meats are created by just such processes - i.e. smoking, curing or salting and adding things like nitrates - none of those sound very healthy. We also know that the body changes nitrates into nitrosamines, known to raise the risk of cancer.

Moderating your intake of red meats is a smart move. And by doing so you leave more room in your meals for good foods like veggies and whole grains. As for the processed variety, less is more.

The report also cautions against drinking too much alcohol, as this might up your colon cancer risk. Extra fat in the belly area appears to play a part in increased cancer risk, which is why experts recommend making other healthy lifestyle choices - taking in more fiber and being more active on a regular basis as being so important.

Cutting red and processed meats from the diet, as well as making other dietary and lifestyle changes (drinking less alcohol, eating more fiber, being active regularly and keeping your weight in the healthy range) could prevent just under half of all colon cancers. That's over 64,000 cases each and every year according to the latest findings.

The good news, explains expert panel members who examined all the literature on the risk of colon cancer symptoms, is that people do have an element of control over the risk of this terrible disease. You can do something to help yourself, but you have to act now, and avoiding eating too much meat is an easy place to start.

Diets High in Protein and Carbs Can Impact Colon Health

Benefits From Exercising Include Reducing Cancerous Colon Polyps

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Colon polyps can be harmless, or a symptom-free precursor to cancer. So keeping these nasty little growths from developing in the first place is a smart way to stay healthy. Research just out finds that one of the benefits from exercising is it may be enough to hold off those cancerous colon polyps. As little as an hour of exercise weekly reduces your risk, especially if you're already overweight or obese.

Anyone can have colon polyps, especially if you're over 50, are a smoker or overweight, eat a diet high in fat, low in fiber, or have a family history of polyps or colon cancer.

Most often colon polyps don't have any symptoms and are found during regular screening where they can be removed and tested. In the later stages colon cancer can be fatal, so early detection is key.

The research on polyps and exercise focused on just about 1,000 patients at a municipal hospital serving a diverse community, all of varying ethnic and racial groups, Hispanic, Asian, black and white, all middle aged and with no elevated risk for either colon polyps or cancer. Almost two thirds were considered overweight. About half were active for at least one hour per week.

A screening questionnaire helped find participants who were not at a higher risk for colon cancer. After screening colonoscopies the team from New York City's Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital, found polyps in 33% of patients who exercised less than an hour each week, compared to 25% of patients who exercised for an hour (or more) per week.

The activity we're talking about here wasn't anything out of the ordinary - walking, climbing stairs and the like.

This surprisingly small amount of exercise cut the chance of adenomas in those who were classed as overweight and black. The cancer risk also went down for black study participants. Exercise, over time (a period of three years was used in the research), provided increased protection from the colon polyps.

The benefits even hold across weight ranges and ethnic groups. And while there's been research in this area many times over, not many studies have looked at how exercise effects a multi-ethnic population. African-Americans are heavily effected by colon cancer, as are the overweight or obese.

The researchers tell us these findings aren't anything new, but rather confirmation of what healthcare pros have been telling us all along - get moving. It's not just good for those cancerous colon polyps, but for all parts of the body. No one knows there are benefits from exercising, though there are plenty of theories. Not to mention figuring out which exercises, and what intensity, bring the most benefit to the body. The good news is that even if you don't have lots of time in your life... or the resources to join a gym or hire a personal trainer, simple, everyday activity can really help your body. Totally do-able for most of us.

Take Steps To Prevent Colon Cancer

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Colon Cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and among the top contributors of cancer-related death. But it is also one of the more treatable and preventable cancers. Since March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, it is a good time to learn about prevention. It's important to know the facts as well as the proactive steps that you can take to protect yourself and reduce your risk factors.

Are you at Risk?

The statistics and estimates are initially frightening. In 2011, it is estimated that 141,000 people will be diagnosed with colon-colorectal cancer and approximately 50,000 people will die from the disease. However, according to an America Cancer Society report more than half of these deaths could be prevented by screening. In addition, studies suggest that a healthy diet is vital in reducing colon cancer risk.

One of the common misconceptions is that only individuals with a family history of colon-colorectal cancer need to be concerned. In fact, statistics show that only 1 in 5 people who are diagnosed with colon-colorectal cancer have a family history; Which means that most people diagnosed with this cancer have no genetic connection to the disease.

Diet and Exercise

It is well known that exercise, diet, nutrition and other lifestyle factors are connected to cancer prevention. What is interesting is that out of all the cancers, colon-colorectal cancer is most impacted by food choices, exercise habits and your weight.

Regular colorectal screening is extremely important in preventing this cancer. Polyps can be identified in their early stage and removed before they can develop into cancer. In addition, you can really play a big role in preventing this cancer by choosing the right foods, getting rid of the wrong ones and making sure that there is plenty of physical activity in your life.

Maintain Healthy Changes

Many of us find it challenging to make long-lasting lifestyle changes. We read about cancer or some other disease, get scared or concerned and vow to make changes in our lives. Some of us get overwhelmed with trying to figure out what to eat and what to do so we never even get started. Many others start to make changes but several weeks later, when the fear motivation dissipates, we return to our original habits.

Using a Health Coach can often make a huge difference. A Health Coach not only provides education, support and guidance but also helps you implement an individualized program to address your specific goals. The approach is to make incremental lifestyle changes in a supported, energized and motivated environment so that you are much more likely to stick with it for the long haul. Studies show that individuals who work with health coaches are more likely to make healthy lifestyle changes. Eating healthier, weight loss and using nutrition to treat disease are some of the goals that individuals have when they work with a Health Coach.

Tips for Reducing Your Risk

Below are several tips for reducing your risk for colon-colorectal cancer.

Colon Cancer Prevention Tips

1. Schedule regular colorectal screenings
2. Include lots of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, kale, cauliflower in your diet as well as colorful fruits and whole grains
3. Eat calcium rich foods such as leafy green vegetables
4. Limit your intake of processed meats or red meat
5. Take steps to maintain a healthy body weight. Being overweight increases your risk for colon cander so you should take active steps to start a weight loss program.
6. Some studies suggest that vitamin D can help reduce cancer risk yet most people are Vitamin D deficient. Check your vitamin D levels (simple blood test) and consider taking supplements.
7. Exercise regularly
8. Avoid smoking and avoid drinking too much alcohol

Colon Cancer Symptoms - Changes In Stool Or Blood In Stool

Colon Cancer Symproms in womenColon cancer symptoms may not be present in many cases. However, if symptoms are seen they can include a variety of changes in the stool or bowel habits (i.e. diarrhea, constipation). Colon cancer also known as Colorectal Cancer, is a malignant (cancerous) tumor growth found in a portion of the large intestine, which is a common cancer site.

Colon Cancer Symptoms And Causes

In many cases of colon cancer no symptoms will be apparent in the early stages of the disease. Later symptoms may develop such as:

Bloody or black, tarry stoolsAbdominal pain or crampsDiarrhea or constipation or narrow stoolUnexplained weight lossAnemia

Most cases begin as benign (non-cancerous) polyps, which slowly become cancerous. The cause of colon (or colorectal) cancer is not well understood but risk factors include being over the age of 60, eating a diet low in fiber and high in fat and red meat, being of African American or eastern European descent, a prior diagnosis of cancer elsewhere in the body or colorectal polyps, the presence of an inflammatory bowel disease (i.e. Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), a family history of colon cancer, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol.

Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States. However, a complete cure is often possible with an early diagnosis.

Colon Cancer Diagnosis And Treatment

Observation of the aforementioned symptoms may lead to a diagnosis but many times the condition is detected through a routine physical exam. Early detection kits may be available for those at high risk, which can detect blood in the stool (available at most pharmacies).

If symptoms have appeared, a physical examination, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, or barium x-rays of the large intestine may be performed to make a definitive diagnosis. Blood tests may be taken to check for anemia and a fecal occult blood test (FOBT) may be ordered to detect small amounts of blood in the stool, which could indicate colon cancer.

Treatment will depend on how much the cancer has progressed and if it has spread to other areas of the body. Surgery to remove the cancer cells is often performed. Surgery may result in a need for a colostomy, which is a diversion of the bowel through an opening in the abdominal wall. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be prescribed as well to destroy cancerous tissues.

Prognosis improves with early detection and treatment.

Colon Cancer Survival Rate - How High Are Your Chances?

Colon Cancer Symptoms in Women - Colon Cancer is a nasty deadly disease and the colon cancer survival rate may just be as nasty once you get to know about them. Depending on the stage where you have been diagnosed, your colon cancer survival rate may either be acceptable or downright shocking. If it's mind-blowing, it may be better to have a heart attack, for when the cancer spreads and metastasizes; the following symptoms may be the worst bodily pain you'll ever experience.

By definition, your colon cancer survival rate is usually based on a five-year period and is mainly determined by the stage of your cancer. From worldwide statistics, your chances of having a long-term prognosis is more likely if the cancer has been detected at the earliest stage possible which is stage zero or the asymptomatic stage. Here comes the despicable thing-like most cancers, colon cancer is a silent killer. You'll never know you have it until it's around its second stage (from which you begin experiencing mild inconvenience upon defecating, digestion, etc). At this time, the treatment plan will no longer be able to completely defeat the cancer and bring you back to your normal life. However, it can impede the fast proliferation of the cancer cells, therefore increasing your colon cancer survival rate to more years than without the treatment.

If the cancer has been detected at the early stage (around 1-2), the chances of surviving until 5 years or more is more likely, especially if the proper treatment regimen is done to you. At this stage, surgery, chemo, and major lifestyle changes must be done and made to prolong your prognosis.

Colonoscopy is very much advisable for stages 1-3, when the cancer has not yet reached the other vital organs of the body and is only confined to your colonic tract. Stage 4 is when the cancer has metastasize to other parts of the body outside the colon-in most cases, the cancer is likely to spread towards your liver first. This is because of the anatomical proximity of the liver to the colon. Once the other parts are affected, your colon cancer survival rate may drastically drop to 20-30 percent even with surgery and other treatments. Thus, you can just imagine how relevant it is to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Generally, over the past few years, cancer research have grown and improved quite substantially compared to the old days. The average survival rate of cancers is now a bit higher than before due to more innovative treatment programs and better knowledge of cancers.

The latest updates from American Cancer Society this year shows that in a five-year colon cancer survival rate:

• Stage 1 has about 74%

• Stage 2 has about 37% to 67%

• Stage 3 has about 28% to 73%

• Stage 4 has about 6%

Note: You may see that stage 3 has much higher survival rate than stage 2. The American Cancer Society states that they have not known the reason behind this yet but this is a factual outcome of the statistical analysis.

What are other factors that will affect your chances of a long-term prognosis and increase your colon cancer survival rate? These and more at Cancer Survival Rates.
